Well, that perfect man existed. And his name.... was Cary Grant. I adore Cary Grant, and so does my mom. Unfortunately....and fortunately, he made so many amazing, incredible, wonderful movies that I can't talk about just ONE in any certain blogpost. SO without further ado, I have decided to write about one Cary Grant movie each week, and I hope you will all begin to love him as much as my Mom and I do...
The first movie I'd like to talk about is the movie "Charade" Boy! Talk about Romance! Suspense! Treasure! Murder! CARY GRANT!!!! AUDREY HEPBURN!!!!! It's fascinating just by the sounds of it! I admit I hadn't watched it until this very evening, but believe me you, you better get on "hulu" this very minute and watch every single second of it! Almost two hours of Cary Grant! How in the world can you even resist watching it just to keep reading this blogpost! You must be immensely insane, dear friend...
Anyhow, Audrey Hepburn's husband gets murdered and a story surfaces that he stole 200,000 dollars from the U.S. government back during World War II with four other army buddies of his. One of those buddies has supposedly died and the other three want their money. And they all think Audrey has it. In comes the delectable Cary and claims that he is three different people at three different parts of the movie. But one thing is clear, he and audrey are falling in love. And the three army "buddies" get bumped off one by one. All of a sudden there are two thrilling chases, during which we find out that the one man Audrey does trust, a "Mr. Bartholemew" isn't really who he says, but the buddy who was supposedly dead! Crazy right!!!???? Anyhow, they find the source of the treasure and Audrey goes to return it, only to find out that the man she has to return the source to, happens to be none other than Cary Grant, who tells her his (finally!) real name and the two get engaged. Audrey remarks "I hope we have all boys so that we can name them all after you..." (Peter, Alex, Adam, and Brian).
All in all, it's a great film and you should definitely watch it sometime :)
While I don't have time to write a full fledged blog post today, I thought I might show you a video I made about a year ago for a class that I was in. It is a compilation of some of my favorite movies and actors/actresses.
The other night at COC, one of my friends gave a talk on the Saints, and the thought occurred to me "Why don't I write a blogpost about that one movie with Ricardo Montalban....uh....oh yeah- 'The Reluctant Saint.'" So I decided to write a blogpost about it haha.
Maximilian Schell stars as St. Joseph of Cupertino. The Italian man was rather slow witted and was forced to enter a monastery because his family didn't know what else he would be able to do with his life. Still, Joseph could not do well in his studies for the priesthood. But God had His own way, and Joseph became a priest. God began to work miracles through Joseph and he would levitate while celebrating the Mass or be enraptured by intense ecstasies.
As I mentioned earlier, Ricardo Montalban was also in this movie. He plays a priest who doubts the holiness of St. Joseph but then changes his mind after he sees some of the miracles performed by Joseph, rather like St. Thomas after the resurrection of Christ.
I LOVE LUCY!!!!! No, really, I do.... I also love Ricky...and Ethel...and Fred....
At this point, if you don't know what I am talking about, I might just go into a corner and cry like a baby...
On the other hand, you might just know exactly who and what I am talking about, and in that case... GOOD FOR YOU!!! For example, I was talking to my good friend Madeleine this morning, and I told her I was going to blog on the iconic "I Love Lucy" Show from the 1950s. She immediately said ecstatically, "Oh! That show is awesome. I love that show!"
And once you see one episode of Lucy Ricardo, you can't get enough, you just have to watch all of them! Lucy is married to the Cuban bandleader, Ricky Ricardo. Lucy gets into all sorts of scrapes and trouble (like getting a little buzzed off of Vitameatavegamin)... which makes Ricky angry most of the time and he then spouts off words in Spanish. And then with Ricky's thick accent, Lucy can easily make fun of him. But the two are obviously in love, and they love their neighbors/ landlords Fred and Ethel Mertz. Fred usually stands by Ricky, unless he is right alongside the girls trying to get famous in Ricky's floor show at "The Tropicana." And Ethel never deserts her good friend, Lucy, even when Lucy gets them both into terrible scrapes.... like working at a chocolate factory.
Old or young, "I Love Lucy," is a show for everyone.
Fascinating fact: Lucy and Ricky were married in real life. Their names were Desi and Lucy Arnaz. Unfortunately, shortly after the show ended, the two were divorced....sad isn't it?
God Bless 'til I get back from Beeton-ton!!!
Ps) The mistake Ricky makes in this clip was actually a real mistake haha!
Doris Day plays the historic Calamity Jane. Howard Keel (who played Adam in "Seven Brides for Seven Brothers) stars as her love interest, Wild Bill Hickok. Talk about love triangles!!!----or actually a love square. As soon as Katie Brown (Allyn McLerie), comes into town at first masquerading as the gorgeous show girl, Adelaid Adams, the whole town of Deadwood is in an uproar. Once her true identity is known, Lieutenant Danny Gilmartin (who "calam" originally is infatuated with) and Bill Hickok beat each other up trying to win Katie's affections. So Calam thinks she loves Danny, who loves Katie, who loves Danny back, while bill also believes he is in love with Katie....Confusing isn't it? HAHA Calam catches Katie and Danny together and is outraged. She tells Katie to get out of town and is confronted by Bill. The two realize their love for each other. The next day, Calam heads into town to tell Katie she and Bill are getting married and to ask for forgiveness. But Katie has already left town. Calam races after the stagecoach on her horse and finally catches up with her. All is cleared up and Calam and Bill are married and Katie and Danny are as well. All in all, it's a great film and has some GREAT songs, like "Higher than a Hawk" and "Secret Love," sung by Keel and Day, respectively. It also has some great humor that you just can't miss!!!! God Bless 'Till I get back from Beeton-ton!!!
Ok, I haven't written in some time. I truly am sorry. But I will make this post worth your while. Haha
Fred Astaire. What else do I really need to say? Any movie that the King of Dance is in is automatically going to be a classic. This is just one of his many classics. Joining him as his lead female costar is Judy Garland. She does an impeccable job as Hannah Brown. Peter Lawford and Anne Miller also join Astaire and Garland.
Astaire plays a vaudevillian dancer whose partner, Miller, deserts him because she is infatuated with Johnny, played by Lawford. Johnny on the other hand wants nothing to do with her other than be a friend. He wants to see the two back together. But Astaire takes on a new partner, played by Garland. Garland and Astaire see Miller walking in the Easter Parade and Fred promises that in one year, everyone in the parade will be looking at Judy and not at Miller.
Judy's and Fred's characters fall in love over the one year time period and Astaire almost louses up their romance and their dancing team. But Johnny, who originally had a crush on Garland, helps to patch things up and the two are brought together again and go to the Easter Parade, where Astaire proposes to Garland.
I've got to say, it is like my family's tradition to watch this movie every Easter Sunday, along with "It's A Wonderful Life" on Christmas Eve.
Anyhow, I hope ya'll had a wonderful and blessed Easter!
For those of you who don't know what the title is referring to... SHAME ON YOU!!!!! That line is eagerly shouted from one of the Seven Pontipee Brothers, the youngest- Gideon. Who is Gideon Pontipee? Oh My!!!! He is from the outstanding musical, "Seven Brides For Seven Brothers." If you haven't seen it, you need to stop what you are doing and go watch it...right now.
It is the tale of seven brothers who live in Oregon. From the oldest to the youngest they were Adam, Benjamin, Caleb, Daniel, Ephraim, Frank(short for Frankincense. All the boys' names are alphabetical and from the old testament), and Gideon. After Adam marries Milly, the younger brothers want wives as well. This is the hilarious tale of how the brothers get those wives.
I have seen this movie so many times throughout my lifetime. It is definetly a classic!!!!!!
Tonight, I went to Catholics on Campus at SVSU. One of the topics briefly touched on was the Catholic Sacrament of Reconciliation (Confession). The thought occurred to me, "Hmmmm. What a great idea for my blog!!"
So tonight, I want to tell you about an amazing Alfred Hitchcock movie called "I confess." Montgomery Clift and Anne Baxter are two of the stars in the movie. Clift plays a Roman Catholic priest in Quebec City. Baxter plays a friend of his.
The story centers around a murder. The murder was committed by the handyman at the parish church. The handyman asks the priest to hear his confession. In the confessional, the murderer confesses his sin of murder.
When the police start investigating the murder, they suspect the handyman, and they ask the priest if he knows anything. This puts the priest in a pickle. He is bound by the seal of confession, to keep secret the sins of the people who confess to him. So even though he knows the handyman committed the murder, he can not tell the police anything. How hard would that be!? Eventually, the handyman accidentally turn himself in. And the rest of the events of the film center around the handyman's accidental confession to the police that he is the murderer.
It is an excellent movie!!! It shows pretty accurately, too, the whole Sacrament of Confession. I think it is a must see, but then again, all of the stuff I write about on here are must sees!!!! haha
God Bless 'til I get back from Beeton-ton!!!
From the scene where Clift hears the man's confession
For those of you who don't know, Jim Caviezel (the guy who played Jesus in "The Passion") and that creepy dude from "Lost" star in a TV show together. That TV show is called "Person of Interest." And HOLY COW! They are a superb duo and the show itself is very riveting. The minute I heard Caviezel was doing his own show, I knew I was gonna like it.
The two form a sort of their own detective agency/ police squad. They aren't really apart of the Police force, but they help the police plenty. Caviezel is the "brawn" and that creepy guy (whose name is actually Michael Emerson haha) is the brains of the outfit.
Each episode features the two working on a different case, obviously, and about the difficulties each case presents to them. It really is an "edge of your seat" kind of show. I think you all would really enjoy it. Yes, its not an old movie, or show, but hey, some new stuff out there has "Classic" written all over it. Give this show a chance :)
So tonight, I found an article about the making of the CLASSIC film starring HUMPHREY BOGART (yes, he is one of my favorite actors of like all time...) and Ingrid Bergman. I thought you guys would really like to see it as well. It's really awesome. I hope you enjoy it.
"Here's lookin' at you, kid."
But, first, I HAVE to tell a quick story relating to the movie. About ten years ago, two of my brothers took my soon to be sister-in-law to the old movie theater in downtown Bay City. Jamie had not yet seen Casablanca, and that was what the State Theater was showing that day. (Btw, neither of those brothers were the ones who were engaged to Jamie). Rich and Chris were really excited to show her the movie, especially because its so great. When they all came back that night, they told us that the movie was great, and Jamie really liked it, but apparently the candy they got (Milk Duds) were so stale, they thought they were probably as old as the theater. "I'm surprised I didn't bust my teeth on them" Rich said. Haha
Ok, enough of my ramblings. Here is the article!!!!
In my very first post on here, I told ya'll about why I had started this blog, and I mentioned a person who is, and was very dear to me- my Grandma, Mary Christe
I remember the day it happened. It? What it? You are probably asking. The day I learned about HIM! Him? Yes, the greatest comedian of ALL time...Bob Hope.
So, I was just a little kid, sitting on Grandma's lap watching a series of old movies that all had the same actor. He was very funny, and I liked him a lot. So I asked Grandma, "Grandma, who is that man?"
"That, Mary Kate, is Bob Hope."
And that was what really started me wanting to learn more about the people in these movies.
And the singers Grandma got me listening to... Like Frank Sinatra.... I like, really really love to listen to Frank Sinatra. But unfortunately, through my research of F.S, I've learned that he didn't live a very good life. That makes me upset, but the actors and singers that I have found that actually lived good lives made up for it...like Danny Thomas, Ricardo Montalban, and Maureen O' Hara.
Grandma gave me a gift that I could never repay. She gave me my hobby. She gave me the instant feeling of wanting to dance the moment....no the second....that I hear a Glenn Miller song. By the way, I seriously love Glenn Miller. He is the best....
So the other day, I was kinda just chilling at work (I'm a bagger at a grocery store- its pretty fascinating- in case your wondering that was definitely sarcasm lol), when I see some magazine on the rack. And guess what?!??!?!?!?! Doris Day is still alive! Can you believe that? I was floored. I thought she had died a couple years ago. So I look at one of my coworkers whose probably in her late thirties and I say, "Amy! Doris Day is STILL alive!"
She gives me this weird look and says, "Who the heck is Doris Day?"
I stared at her in disbelief. she had NEVER heard of Doris Day. I was flabbergasted. I glanced over at my other coworker, an older lady who mainly just works the "U-scans." "Nan, Amy has never heard of Doris Day!"
Nan's jaw dropped. "How can you not know of Doris Day?" she asked. Then she launched into "Secret Love" and "Que Sera Sera," both well known songs of Day. An older gentleman was checking out at the "U-scans" and was listening intently to our conversation. Nan and I were spouting off names of the movies that Doris had made and who the male lead was in each, and that she had done a couple pictures with Alfred Hitchcock (who in my personal opinion was a mastermind of a director....but who doesn't just love Hitch?)
Finally the old man piped in. "Wait a second, young lady." he said as I was in mid-sentence of saying how great Doris was in "The Young at Heart" with Frank Sinatra. "How do you know all these actors, actresses, movies, and directors?! You can't be more than twenty-six years old!"
I blushed deep red. " I am nineteen."
"Exactly! You are a young 'un!"
"Well, sir, old movies and old music are my passion. I love all of them, and I learn as much as I can about them."
"I see. Well you keep that up. Most young people your age don't have a clue about what they are missing out on!"
I smiled and "Don't worry, sir, I will."
It was so great to make that old gentleman's night and to show him that not all young people are punks who are on drugs, and have some style and taste in movies and music. Haha
So, i know i hadn't written in a very long time before today. Well, last night, I was reading a blog by a young man I had met about a week ago at a local college. I met him with a group of other college students that are known as "Catholics on Campus." They are a great group of people!!!
Anyhow, so I was reading this young man's blog, and he had written a post about blogging. I commented on the post. I asked the young man, whose name is Kevin, how he was able to keep up with his blog. I told him that I wasn't able to keep up my blog because I just didn't have the time and because I was discouraged by the lack of hits I was getting.
Kevin told me not to give up. That if I really love what I'm doing, I'll be able to keep up with it, no matter how busy I am, and not to get discouraged, but to keep on plugging, and writing on the blog about what I love...
I gave what Kevin said to me some serious thought. He was right. I shouldn't get discouraged. I should just keep writing about what I love, even if wasn't getting many comments on my posts. So I got back on, and just today I've written three posts because I've just got to talk to you guys! And guess what!? Today alone, over twenty people have viewed the blog!!!! Isn't that incredible?!
I can only thank one person for getting me back to the blogosphere, and a tremendous amount of viewers. So, Kevin, if you ever read this post. I just want to thank you so much for helping me out. I really appreciate it. I can't wait to see you and the rest of the gang from SVSU at Catholics on Campus.
Yes, I simply can't wait until tomorrow to tell you about the famous singer from the fifties through the early 70s...
Bobby Darin was born May 14, 1936 as Walden Robert Cassotto. When he was just a little boy, he had recurring bouts of rheumatic fever, which left his heart frail. He was told he wouldn't live past the age of 15 or 16 so Bobby was determined to make it big before he died. He was going to be even better than Frank Sinatra!
At first it was very hard, but then he sang a song that splashed its way into the hearts of all teenagers. The rock n' roll song was called Splish Splash. He also had other hits, such as Beyond the Sea, and Mack the Knife.
In 1960, Bobby married actress Sandra Dee, who had acted with him in the movie, Come September. Rock Hudson was also in the movie with the two. Their son, Dodd Mitchell Darin was born in 1961.
Unfortunately, the two divorced in 1969.
At the age of 37, in 1973, Bobby Darin died, after surgery trying to repair his heart.
Sorry about that!!! I've been CRAZY busy! With two jobs and school, I dont have a lot of time, but I promise to make more time for you guys! So here is the deal. I decided to add singers to the site to. Not just actors and movies, and after all, some singers do a bit of acting too. So, make sure you look for my next post tomorrow about a singer.... I wonder who it will be? ;)
John Wayne. Maureen O' Hara. What else must one say? These two people were an incredible pair, very good friends in real life.
Sean Thorton is an Irish born young man who went away to America as a young boy. Now he has come back to Ireland looking to by back the home of his ancestors.
He meets a beautiful, fiery red-head by the name of Mary Kate Danaher. The two persuade her brother to allow them to court each other and eventually they are married, and have to deal with Mary Kate's love for her inheritance, which her brother has threatened to take from her.
The most notable lines in the movie are undoubtedly: "Here's a big stick to beat the lovely lady," and "There'll be no locks or bolts between us, Mary Kate, except those in your own mercenary little heart."
Such great lines!!!!!
Definitely a must see! In my opinion John Wayne's best movie!!!
Danny Thomas was a fantastic, wonderful person and a tremendous humanitarian.
Born in a little town near Detroit, Michigan as Muzyad Yakhoob, Danny Thomas was born into a family of 9 or 10 children. They moved to Toledo when he was a very little boy and there he grew up. when he was around 18 or 19, he moved back to Detroit, and there, as he worked at a radio station, he met his future wife.
He struggled as a comedian for a very long time, indeed after he was married and had a child. Then, he heard about a saint that had nearly been forgotten, St. Jude. He asked the saint for help and afterwards, his rise in show business was meteoric. From nightclubs, to movies, to television, Danny found his way into the hearts of all Americans.
He started the St. Jude Children's Research Hospital as an honor to the Saint who helped him become successful in show business.
Although its been a little while since I've watched "Lost," I remember it being an extremely riveting series. It always would end abruptly, making the audience want more and more.
At the beginning of the series, the audience sees a tremendous plane crash on a deserted island. Through the course of the series, we get to know the main passengers that were on the plane. We see their past and their present, and eventually, as the series continues, their future as well, which can get a little confusing at times.
Each episode concentrates on a different person that is stuck on the island. There are many people stuck on the island, but the show only focuses on maybe 10 of these people.
Here is an article from the New York Times about the series:
TELEVISION; Making 'Lost' Last, And Seeing It Home
By LORNE MANLY
Published: May 16, 2
AFTER six twisty seasons filled with time-traveling castaways, mysterious happenings on a tropical island, fervid arguments about faith versus reason and enough hook-ups and smackdowns to rival Craigslist and ''Raw,'' ''Lost'' comes to an end on May 23. And on the first Monday of May, with just hours to go before the show runners Damon Lindelof and Carlton Cuse have to finish the final cut of the two-and-a-half-hour finale, the bungalow that houses the creative team of ''Lost'' on the Disney lot here had a forlorn air to it.
Most of the writers had been gone for weeks. Packed boxes lined the walls. Even the video arcade games in the common area -- Asteroids, Battlezone and Multicade -- were uprooted that morning and returned to their owner, J. J. Abrams, a creator of the show with Mr. Lindelof. But the simpatico team of Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse, who joined early in the first season to help oversee the show, appeared upbeat despite a week of little sleep. Concluding the popular series may be bittersweet, but the two men are going out on their own terms, having persuaded ABC three years ago to grant them this creative closure even if the show were still riding high in the ratings.
Over breakfast (which they literally shared), Mr. Lindelof and Mr. Cuse spoke about the show's most important big theme, the role of fate in their own storytelling and just how much of the ending was known from the beginning. Below are excerpts from the conversation. (A longer version is at nytimes.com/television.)
Q. You both have decided to pull a David Chase: that like the creator of ''The Sopranos,'' you weren't going to answer questions about the ending and the larger meanings of the series. Why did you make that decision?
CARLTON CUSE We've kind of done the same thing every other year too, which is, we haven't talked after the finale for some period of time because we want the audience to have a chance to digest the show and arrive at their own conclusions. We think it would be sort of enormously both presumptuous and frustrating for the audience to have someone say, ''No, what you think is wrong because this is what Damon and Carlton said.'' We think one of the things that's been the coolest about ''Lost'' is that there's a lot of intentional ambiguity, and there's a lot of room for debate and discussion.
Q. Your show traffics in a lot of big themes -- fate versus free will, good versus evil, faith versus reason, how often Sawyer should be shirtless. Ultimately, what were the most important themes for you in this series?
DAMON LINDELOF If there's one word that we keep coming back to, it's redemption. It is that idea of everybody has something to be redeemed for and the idea that that redemption doesn't necessarily come from anywhere else other than internally. But in order to redeem yourself, you can only do it through a community. So the redemption theme started to kind of connect into ''live together, die alone,'' which is that these people were all lone wolves who were complete strangers on an aircraft, even the ones who were flying together like Sun and Jin. Then let's bring them together and through their experiences together allow themselves to be redeemed. When the show is firing on all pistons, that's the kind of storytelling that we're doing.
I think we've always said that the characters of ''Lost'' are deeply flawed, but when you look at their flashback stories, they're all victims. Kate was a victim before she killed her stepfather. Sawyer's parents killed themselves as he was hiding under the bed. Jack's dad was a drunk who berated him as a child. Sayid was manipulated by the American government into torturing somebody else. John Locke had his kidney stolen. This idea of saying this bad thing happened to me and I'm a victim and it created some bad behavior and now I'm going to take responsibility for that and allow myself to be redeemed by community with other people, that seems to be the theme that we keep coming back to.
Q. These are big themes for not necessarily the most hospitable host, a network series. How do you find a way to work these themes in while dealing with the constraints of, you're not on cable channels like AMC or even HBO, you're on ABC, and you still need that significant audience?
Hey everyone!!!! It's Kate here. I just wanted to remind you that I live to hear your ideas and opinions concerning my posts. Feel free to comment on any of them that interest you!!! If that is all of them, then comment on all of them! I WANT to hear what you have to say!!!!!
